Today in class, we talked about why teachers use a reading log, and the impact it has on us as readers. When I sit down to enjoy a book, I don't think about how many minutes I'm reading. Chances are, if I set a timer to "read for 20 minutes", I wouldn't be at a good place to stop when the timer goes off. I've also done a lot of research on the positives and negatives of a reading log.
With all that being said, we will not be using a reading log this year. We will be doing a few different things instead. It is my hope that these things will help encourage students to read, and help them find their love of reading and learning! Look Who Got Caught Reading-When you "catch" your child reading at home, please take a picture and email it to me. I will print these out and display them on a bulletin board in the classroom. It is my hope that students will enjoy finding themselves on the board. This will also help students know that you are watching, and I am waiting!! Book Status-In class, I will ask students their "book status". They will follow a script like this: "Right now, I am reading (book title) and I am on page (#). In my story, (short 1-2 sentence summary)." I have a calendar for each student that I will write their book status on. This will help me keep track of how many pages a student is reading each week. Additionally, I will know if students are not completing a book, and can remind students to take AR quizzes when they are done. Since the entire class will be listening, students will also get ideas about new books they can be reading! AR-Accelerated Reader is an amazing program. I will be meeting with students to discuss each of their goals for AR this school year. I will be keeping track of student points, and you can access student points at home as well. What happens if they aren't reading? I do have traditional reading logs that are available for those students that are not reading. While I'd prefer not to use these, students know that I have them and they are an option for those that choose not to read this year. If you have any questions, please let me know! I appreciate your help and support creating lifelong readers! -Miss Dugan

Welcome to a new school year!!
If you're reading this before Open House, I can't wait to meet you! If you're reading this after Open House, I hope you are more excited for school to start now! Regardless, it is going to be an incredible year. I plan on utilizing this website throughout the school year. I will upload pictures, what we're reading, and post to the blog throughout the year. Mrs. Strayer and I use "Remind" to send quick text messages to you. We will send you Spirit Day updates, when something new is posted to the blog, updates about swimming, schedule changes, and other quick reminders. These can come in as text messages or emails, your preference. Below I have attached multiple ways to sign up for these remind texts. Make sure you sign up for your childs homeroom (mine or Mrs. Strayers) as our schedules can sometimes differ. If you have any questions, please let me know! (Either fill out the contact form on the main page of this site, or email me at [email protected]) |
